Instructor Information: (Stephen Covington-O’Kelley) I’m a Reed College graduate and after spending close to 20 years in real estate and banking I’ve been a stay at home dad since my son, Ian, was three months old. We read, craft, draw and sing silly songs with the best of them.

Class geared toward ages: 2 to 6 years.
Class cost per student: $40.
Supply fee:$5 additional.
Drop-in fee: $10.
QUESTIONS? OR TO REGISTER CONTACT: Stephen at covingtonokelley@sbcglobal.net.

KNITTING BEYOND THE BASICS
9:30AM-10:30AM
In this class we will pick a new skill each week to focus on and learn. As your knitting advances you might come across different techniques that you are unfamiliar with, and sometimes that keeps good knitters form moving forward and challenging themselves. In most cases the actual technique is not as scary as it seems. We will focus on a new skill for each of the 6 weeks.

Week 1: I-cord
Week 2: three needle bind off and grafting (kitchener stitch)
Week 3: provisional cast on (knit a project on a provisional cast on to be finished by week 5)
Week 4: picking up stitches
Week 5: part two provisional cast on (picking up provisional stitches and casting off)
Week 6: making button holes (yarn over and bind off cast on techniques for button holes)

Be prepared to come into class with some knitted samples for some of the classes. For example: we can’t graft stitches together without two samples to graft together. We do not have enough time in class to wait to make the samples in class. I will give everyone detailed instructions after you register.         CLASS MAX OF 8 STUDENTS.

Instructor Information: Denyse has been teaching knitting at AJCW for a long time now. Oh, no! My knitters are gaining skills and will soon surpass me. Teaching more advanced knitting feels a bit like homeschooling a teenager. Y’all are catching me.

Class geared toward ages: 9+ years.
Class cost per student: $60.
Supply fee: Students will be responsible for their own supplies.
Drop-in fee:$10 drop in for students wanting to learn only the skill being taught on that specific day. YOU MUST REGISTER IN ADVANCE WITH ME FOR DROP INS. Drop in registration won’t begin until 1 week after regular registration opens. Class size must be small for knitting instruction and if I have knitters who are registering for the whole 6 weeks that limits the space for drop ins.
Prerequisites: This is not a beginning knitting class. Students must know how to knit, purl, cast on, bind off. My only beginning knitting class was held in the first fall session. Contact me if you are interested in beginning knitting. I might be starting a class in my home in April.
QUESTIONS? OR TO REGISTER CONTACT: Denyse at denyse.ffrench@gmail.com.

DIY ZINE MAKING
9:30AM-10:30AM
Are you creative? Do you DIY? Do you want to communicate in print? For decades, zines have been a DIY outlet for creative printed expression. Of course, we will come up with a theme for the class zine that everyone will create. All of this will happen in 6 weeks, plus you will also make your own personal mini-zine. At the end of class, you will get multiple copies of your zine and the class zine to share and trade with others.

Instructor Information: Class will be facilitated by Kim Campbell. She has found plenty of opportunities to share her love of writing with the Chicago community of homeschoolers. She has worked as a literacy tutor, taught writer’s workshops and zine writing workshops and was the founder of the tween and teen clubs with NUG kids. HISTORY OF ASTRONOMY
9:30AM-10:30AM
We’re living in a Golden Age of astronomical discovery. Thousands of planets in other star systems have been found, single molecules have been located in outer space, and in a few years a telescope will be placed thousands of miles from earth and push back the light barrier of human knowledge. It’s a good time to look back and see the advance of understanding, before rockets, before radio, before even the telescope, when instruments made from wood and string and very difficult mathematics performed by hand, over many years, placed the earth and the universe around it.

Instructor Information: My name is Ben Huizenga, and I’m a bookseller at Half Price Books. I love astronomy. It’s my favorite science. I’ve been reading about it since I was a child, especially the early history, before the telescope. Even in a city whose light pollution occludes the stars, I look up hoping.

Class geared toward ages: 10 years and up.
Class cost per student: $60.
Drop-in fee: $10.

Instructor Information: Amy Jarjusey is an unschooly mom of five ages 5 months to 13 years. She happens to be the co-founder and coordinator of AJCW, but far more importantly, her mind is still very much in this state of create and play mode! Encouraging free, imaginative construction and building, she feels, is so very important to development at all ages. She can’t wait to get building and creating with your young ones!

YO HABLO ESPANOL
10:40AM-11:40AM
My passion is to teach the Spanish language through theatre, magic and interactive play. My goal is to generate a “love” for Spanish and get the kids to learn the language without realizing that they are learning a new language. I do this by involving the children in activities they enjoy and are familiar with. We will create improve games where they will speak and learn Spanish. Through creative play, real life situations, repetition and enjoyment the kids will gain a deeper understanding and retention of the language. In this class the kids are guaranteed to have fun while learning.

Instructor Information: My name is Manuel Rueda, I’m 22 years old. I am from Madrid, Spain and at the moment, I am an international exchange student studying at a local university here in Chicago. I have a degree from the Uni. Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid in teaching physical theatre and visual art. I have worked with children of all ages for more than 13 years in many capacities. This includes theatre, magic and circus. I never liked learning language because I considered the books and worksheets to be quite tedious and I felt that it was not a good way to learn something as beautiful as language. One day I traveled to another country and realized that we can learn language by involving the students in the language. I developed an interactive program to teach language through the arts. I have taught English to children in Spain using this method very successfully.

Class geared toward ages: 6+ years.
Class cost per student: $50.

HOW TO READ ADVERTISING
10:40AM-11:40AM

Nobody likes to imagine that advertising has an effect on their decisions, but as the account executive for Kikkoman soy sauce once told me, they wouldn’t spend billions on it every year if it didn’t work. This class will watch a lot of advertising, print, TV, web, attempting to unravel how they work to influence their viewers. We will look for common themes among different types of products, generational advertising, and other such goodies.

Instructor Information: My name is Ben Huizenga, and I’m a bookseller at Half Price Books. I’ve always liked ads, my wife and my sister and I even made one a few years ago. As Gore Vidal once wrote, the 30 second TV ad spot is America’s only native art form. I taught a class on the history of advertising last year at AJCW, which I enjoyed deeply, and would like to revisit.

Class geared toward ages: 10 years and up.
Class cost per student: $60.
Drop-in fee: $10.

CircusYoga blends the practice of yoga with the skills of circus. Throughout our classes we will explore kinesiology, creativity and connection.   Yoga is an ancient science that teaches us how to be aware of our bodies in action. Circus is a culture of inclusion and celebration that teaches us how remarkable we can be in our bodies. We will begin exploring our anatomy and physiology as it relates to a particular skill. We will learn how the whole body and the focus of the mind contribute to our movement, choices and abilities in any activity. We can expect to learn about the nervous, endocrine and circulatory systems over our six weeks. Our session will culminate with a wonderful performance too! If you took this class last session, this will be new information.

YOUR AUTHENTIC SELF  *** THIS CLASS HAS BEEN CANCELED
2:40PM-3:40PM

Come on out and self-discover the beauty of your authentic being… the authentic self-expression this world longs to have! This world is not in nee
d of another doctor, teacher, lawyer                        (you fill in the blank). The world is in need of the most authentic YOU! We are not the clothes, the conversation, the social media the….. we are not the ‘likes’ or followers vs. following numbers we read on a daily basis. We will be exploring and mastering tools each week to understand the person we were meant to be, and not the person we think we ‘should’ be. We will learn to turn off the noise, set boundaries, lighten up, use commas vs periods…. and just a whole slew more! We will take from Ted talks, many reputable speakers, documentaries and invisionaries, and put into practice liberating ourselves from our fears, finding out who we are, and realize that playing small does not serve the world or those around us. Letting our light shine unconsciously gives permission to those around us to do the same. As we discuss, share and practice through various modes and methods, our Authentic Self Circle will become a precious space for sharing and enlightening. What is shared in the circle will stay in the circle. This workshop is present for tweens and teens to feel safe to share, and are encouraged to grow. Please join us to find that authentic self-expression yearning to shine bright!

Instructor Information: Amy Jarjusey is an unschooly mom of five amazing kiddos ages 5 months to 13 years. One of her many reasons to homeschool involves much of what this workshop is attempting to encapsulate in such a short period of time. Her hope is that by instigating this class is that it will flourish to future workshops because as we all know…. It’s a work on progress. Try, try again is a positive motto to carry through life when failures are bound to approach us. She’s excited to get to know your tweens and teens and share useful tools and techniques for each of us to continue to discover and be our truest most authentic selves.

Class geared toward ages: 11+ years.
Class cost: $65.
Drop-in fee: $12.
Prerequisites: A notebook, pen, and a willingness to openly discuss in a group setting.
