Care Packages for the Homeless – Thursday, December 3rd, to take place at Kaabilo during the day.

When: Thursday December 3, 2015, 9:15am-1:00pm

What: Living in the city we are often approached by homeless members of the community asking for money or other assistance.  We would like to have something to give to people in need, but we do not always want to give money.  We would like to put together bags that will be kept in the car, if people approach the car the kids can hand the bag to the homeless person.  We think that if we all band together we could combine our resources and make some really great bags.  We would like to make between 200-400 bags to pass out.

Zip lock bags would contain some or all of the following items:
snacks, granola bars, tuna & crackers or fruit cups
gift certificates for McDonalds or Dunkin Donuts
water
mints, gum or cough drops
toothbrush
tooth paste
kleenex
band aids
personal care wipes
clean socks
gloves
hats
list of local homeless shelters and food pantries
personal note from your child or family
(Avoid items containing alcohol like mouthwash and hand sanitizer)
If you would like to participate:
Please e-mail Juli and she will assign you an item to purchase or let me know what item you plan to bring. chicagohomeschoolfieldtrips@gmail.com
If you would like to participate but you do not want to go out and purchase items, you could donate cash via check or Chase Quick Pay. Donations will be used to purchase items for the care packages.
Also please let her know if you would like to volunteer to purchase some items like the fast food gift certificates with financial donations collected, type up a list of local resources that can be put in the bags or solicit donations at store and businesses in your area.
Once we have all of the donations, kids can go around and assemble the care packages on the day of the service project December 3rd. Depending on how many families participate I imagine that each family can go home with 20+ bags to keep in the car and handout throughout the holiday season.

THE HISTORY OF HUMAN ENERGY
TUESDAY, 9:15AM – 10:15A
Energy is the capacity to do work. Different energies allow you to do different kinds of work, with greater or less difficulty. Among the many revolutions in human affairs that we are living in, the revolution in energy use might be the most important. So this class will look at the past of human energy use, especially at turning points where new sources of energy became more accessible, and it will look at the near future, as the work of humanity continues to grow and change.

Instructor Information: My name is Ben Huizenga, and I’m a bookseller at Half Price Books. I love the history of technology, which is, essentially, one layer up from the history of energy. I got really into peak-oil-doomsday scenarios a few years ago, but now I’m better. I promise. Kenneth Deffeyes, the Princeton geologist, wrote in one of his books that now would be a good time to teach children about thermodynamics. So, here’s my little contribution to that goal.

Class is geared toward ages: 10+ years.
Class cost per student: $100
Drop-in fee: $10

MINDFUL PARENTING THROUGH MEDITATION
TUESDAY, 10:25A – 11:25A
Have you ever lost your temper with your children or your partner?  Have you ever witnessed your emotions escalating, driving you to respond to a situation in a way that is volatile or reactionary?  Have you ever wished you could better model for your children a peaceful, mindful approach towards being present with emotions without needing to act on them?  Meditation is a wonderful tool to build skills for more peaceful, mindful parenting.  But the key to unlocking this powerful tool is regular practice.  In this course, suitable for beginning or experienced meditators, we will discuss specific meditation techniques and practice them together.  There will also be some time to discuss our experiences and ask each other questions. Through this work, it is possible to get more control over ourselves and that part of our mind that wants to respond so intensely to things, so that we can be empowered to make choices about how we respond to challenges, and model this kind of self-regulation for our families.  Also, this course can just be a moment to be quietly present with yourself in the middle of our long, challenging and noisy days….

Instructor Information: Larisa Eastman is a parent of two.  She works as a dancer and teaches dance, improvisation, breathwork and mindfulness techniques to performers.  She has also been a practicing massage therapist for over twenty years, currently focusing on Thai Massage.  Larisa grew up within the tradition of Kriya Yoga and has been a lifelong seeker of more balanced consciousness (with fluctuating amounts of success).

Class is geared toward ages: Parents and motivated/interested teens.
Class cost per student:: $40 or pay what you can.
Drop-in fee: pay what you can.

CREATE YOUR OWN CITY
THURSDAY, 9:15A – 10:15A
*** NOTE: This class will run for 9 weeks.NO classes December 3rd.
Using the book Cities by Kathleen M. Reilly (Nomad Press) as inspiration, we will explore cities and use what we discover to create our own cities.  Each week, we will look at an aspect of a city possibly including, energy generation, nature, housing, transportation, food, shopping districts, water systems, skyscrapers, and more and create projects around those topics that feed into our designs.  Class will begin with a short discussion of the topic and the rest of the time will be spent working on a project such as “creating subway cut-aways to understand how transportation systems work, building an aqueduct to learn how cities get water, and experimenting with skyscraper design”.  Cardboard, glue, large sheets of drawing paper, pens and rulers.  Let’s get creative and design cities.

Instructor Information: I am Jennifer Meyer, a homeschool mom of one eleven year old boy, Nicholas.  As a former children’s librarian, I love to find books that inspire and inform and develop programming around those books.  My hope is to bring topics, project ideas and materials and then provide the space where kids can dream, imagine, design, draw and build.

Class is geared toward ages: 10 years and older.
Class cost per student: $80. *** NOTE: This class will run for 9 weeks.NO classes December 3rd.

CODES & CIPHERS
THURSDAY, 9:15A – 10:15A

This class will play around with various codes and ciphers, from book codes to substitution and graph ciphers. Students will make some simple cipher machines, and I’ll discuss some of the famous uses and misuses of codes and secret writing through history, from the Enigma machines to the political trials of the English  Restoration.

Instructor Information: My name is Ben Huizenga, and I’m a bookseller at Half Price Books. I enjoy codes very much, and I tend to see them everywhere. I’m tempted to write that I see all of language as a code, using a collection of signs to stand in for something else, so that human beings are natural cryptologists, limited only by their access to signals. But that would be silly. Surely.

ART OF THE MOTION PICTURE – A STUDY OF FILM AND DIGITAL ART THURSDAY, 10:25A – 11:25A
This course explores the science of the creation of Motion Pictures (movies, commercial, videos) in both the film and digital mediums. From its inception in the early 1900’s through its vast transformation into the new millennium, motion pictures are vehicles of visual expression that have been used to entertain, educate, inspire, and even challenge its viewers. This course examines the aesthetic techniques and what makes this a powerful and influential art form. If you love movies and would like to get further insight into the process, or if you’re an aspiring filmmaker and would like to build an aesthetic foundation to prepare you for your practice, or if you simply would like to expand your knowledge of the medium, this is a great course. This is not a technical course and there is no requirement for technical knowledge in film or video production. This course is also great for students who would like to exercise their critical thinking skills.
