STITCH PATTERNS & CABLES
9:30AM- 10:30AM
In this knitting class we will focus on knitting samples of different stitch patterns. Combining knit and purls in all sorts of ways make very interesting patterns (seed stitch, moss stitch, mistake rib). We will also be learning how to make cables in knitting and will knit a small project or sample in a cable pattern. Much of class time will be learning and practicing the skills. I will also connect you with full projects that use those skills and can be worked on outside of class and during some of the class.

Instructor Information: (Denyse Ffrench) I didn’t learn to knit until I was in my thirties. I took a class on a whim and it just happened to be the thing that inspired me, and helped me cope with stress all at the same time. Over the years I keep challenging myself to try new things with knitting. Most recently I knit a lace wedding dress that made me question all the decisions I have ever made thus far in my life. In other words it was challenging. I think people should just try stuff and see if it clicks. Knitting has taught me patience. You have to let go of perfection and allow yourself to make mistakes so that you can learn how to fix things too.

Class geared toward ages: 9+ years.
Class cost per student: $60. (Max of 8 students will be accepted.)
Supply fee: Students must purchase their own supplies.
Drop-in fee: No drop ins.
Prerequisites for this class: Students must know how to cast on, bind off, knit, purl, decreasing stitches. This is not a beginning knitting class.

*Pompeii
*Nazca
*Ancient mound builders of Ameica
*King Arthur
*Easter Island
*Templar Knights

IT’S YOUR LIFE – JOURNAL TIME
9:30AM- 10:30AM
In this workshop, students will learn the art of keeping a personal journal. This is a great experience for both the reluctant and the prolific writer. The workshop will center on the reasons and methods for journal writing, allowing students to explore their thoughts, goals, feelings, ideas, and creativity. It will be an activity based workshop, with themes and hands-on projects during class time, such as mapping your neighborhood, nature sketches, 20 goals for the year, dream mapping and journal writing prompts. The point behind it is to get kids to enjoy the process of writing and creating art in a freeform and personal way and to provide an outlet for expression that can last a lifetime. In addition to that, it also becomes a tool that allows the writer to practice spelling, punctuation, and handwriting. It improves motor skills, communications skills and encourages self-reflection. Most importantly, it will be a fun class with lots of encouragement to dabble in artistic expression.

Instructor Information: Class will be taught by Kim Campbell. She has found plenty of opportunities to share her love of writing with the Chicago community of homeschoolers. She has worked as a literacy tutor, taught writer’s workshops and zine writing workshops and was the founder of the tween and teen clubs with NUG kids.

Class geared toward ages: 9-15 years.
Class cost per student: $60 per student.
Sibling discount $100 for a pair.
Drop-in fee: $10 for first visit.
Prerequisites for this class: Reading and writing basics. Please bring a notebook, preferably a sturdy 8×10 or 7×5 journal, lined or unlined is the writer’s preference. Also bring pencils and pen. Other art materials will be provided by instructor as needed.
QUESTIONS? OR TO REGISTER CONTACT: Kim at kim@kimzyn.com or 773-559-6860.

TEAM SQUARES
9:30AM- 10:30AM
This is also called square dancing, but the phrase is misleading. There isn’t a whole lot of dancing in square dancing. It’s walking to music. You’re working with a team of seven others to follow a series of commands. And if you can hold your square together till the end of the sequence, it’s a real sense of accomplishment. It’s enormous fun and great exercise. By the end of an evening of square dancing the average dancer has traveled several miles without noticing they were exercising. It’s also a little trickier than you think it’s going to be.

If you’re tempted by the class, ask around. I’ve been getting some very positive feedback from the current class members. This is the last time this season the class will be open to beginners. After this we will be continuing to progress with the kids who have the basics down. Here’s what some very good square dancers look like: https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10100124189834378.

Instructor Information: (Bruce Holmes) I’m a long time square dancer, and I find calling squares fascinating. I’m a member of Callerlab. I’ve taught everything from chess to folk dancing to juggling to Aikido to triathlon to square dancing. I was the coach for the Oakton (elementary school) Chess Team that won two state championships. Working with those kids was the most fun I’ve ever had.

Class geared toward ages: Ten and up, but it really depends on the child. If you’ve got an 8 year old who’s very focused, disciplined and smart (and aren’t all our kids exactly that?), they might ace the class. I’d also love it if the parents would participate for free with the understanding that if there are too many people to make up an even number of squares (eight per square), they’d be willing to sit out on occasion.
Class cost per student: $40 per child, $70 for two kids from the same family, $90 for more than two.
Drop-in fee: No. The learning is cumulative so dropping by half way thru wouldn’t work.
Prerequisites for this class: None.
QUESTIONS? OR TO REGISTER CONTACT: Bruce at Bruce@BruceTHolmes.com.

We will read summaries of the play the speech is from, watch a video performance of the play, discuss the play and the speech, and most likely take turns performing the speech. HISTORY OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR
10:40AM – 11:40AM
This class will discuss a portion of the history of the Second World War. My basic stance is that the Second World War is the central catastrophe of recent human history, radically altering every human place, time or institution, often beyond measure. We are still stumbling in the dark in the effort to assess its effects. This class will not be a History Channel tale of weapons and combat, but a broader introduction to what the world was like before the Second World War, and what it was like afterwards.

Instructor Information: My name is Ben Huizenga, and I’m a bookseller with Half Price Books. The history of the Second World War is still the major engine of the contempary world, in politics, domestic and international, in culture, in gender, in issues surrounding technology and ethics. It’s as well to grow accustomed to how people use that history to make the future.

Class geared toward ages: 12 years and up.

We made it fun and exciting so that we could all enjoy it and we continue to do so even though lessons have moved us forward on the historical timeline. Each week we will read a book related to math, following which the kids will be practicing their addition and subtraction skills by playing a variety of math games to strengthen, sharpen and speed up their mental mathematical abilities. Instructor Information: I am Masha Furmanova, and not a math whiz, but I can add and subtract with the best of them! Playing math games was one of my favorite things to do in grade school. Now I’d like to check my theory that being a facilitator is just as much fun as being a player.

Prerequisites for this class: Have basic adding and subtracting skills. No multiplication skills needed.
