KNITTING 102 – *** CLASSS IS FULL! (Please contact instructor for more info.)
9:30AM- 10:30AM
This class will build upon the basic knitting skills of knitting, purling, Kfb, k2tog. We learn to knit in the round on circular needles and double pointed needles, calculate gauge, and fix mistakes. Students will complete a hat on circular needles. Supplies needed: -circular needles – (size TBA) -double pointed needles – (size TBA) -worsted weight yarn -bring extra yarn for practice on fixing mistakes etc.

Instructor Information: (Denyse Ffrench) I didn’t learn to knit until I was in my thirties. I took a class on a whim and it just happened to be the thing that inspired me, and helped me cope with stress all at the same time. Over the years I keep challenging myself to try new things with knitting. Most recently I knit a lace wedding dress that made me question all the decisions I have ever made thus far in my life. In other words it was challenging. I think people should just try stuff and see if it clicks. Knitting has taught me patience. You have to let go of perfection and allow yourself to make mistakes so that you can learn how to fix things too.

Class geared toward ages: 9+years.
Class cost per student: $60.
Supply fee: $20 (supply fee is waived if you purchase your own supplies and I encourage this).
Drop-in fee: No drop ins.
Prerequisites for this class: Students must have taken knitting 101 with me or the equivalent. These are the skills you must already be solid on to take this class: casting on, knit stitch, purl stitch, binding off.

HISTORY OF BOOKS
11:50AM – 12:50PM
Books have always been sources of power. The questions of who wrote them, who published them and who read them is a miniaturized history of the world. This class will study books, from the earliest papyri to Kindle Fires, and look at some general principles about what goes into books, who puts it there, and what rules govern their creation.

Instructor Information: My name is Ben Huizenga, and I’m a bookseller for Half Price Books. I enjoy my job, mostly because I’m continually surrounded by books. It’s a romantic relationship, really, I and the books. I’m not really a responsible person about it. I used to have a T-shirt that had a quotation from Erasmus on it, “When I get a little money, I buy books. After that, food and clothes.” That’s still true for me, although I don’t have the shirt anymore.

Class geared toward ages: 12 years and up.
Class cost per student: $60.
Drop-in fee: $10.

QUESTIONS? OR TO REGISTER CONTACT: Ben at adso1327@gmail.com.

TEAM SQUARES
11:50AM – 12:50PM
(**Please note: The class will only meet a total of five times. No class November 13.)
This is also called square dancing, but the phrase is misleading. There isn’t a whole lot of dancing in square dancing. It’s walking to music. You’re working with a team of seven others to follow a series of commands. And if you can hold your square together till the end of the sequence, it’s a real sense of accomplishment. It’s enormous fun and great exercise. By the end of an evening of square dancing the average dancer has traveled several miles without noticing they were exercising. It’s also a little trickier than you think it’s going to be. Here’s what some very good square dancers look like: https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10100124189834378

Instructor Information: (Bruce Holmes) I’m a long time square dancer, and I find calling squares fascinating. I’m a member of Callerlab. I’ve taught everything from chess to folk dancing to juggling to Aikido to triathlon to square dancing. I was the coach for the Oakton (elementary school) Chess Team that won two state championships. Working with those kids was the most fun I’ve ever had.

Class geared toward ages: 10 years and up, but it really depends on the child. If you’ve got an 8 year old who’s very focused, disciplined and smart (and aren’t all our kids exactly that?), they might ace the class. I’d also love it if the parents would participate for free with the understanding that if there are too many people to make up an even number of squares (eight per square), they’d be willing to sit out on occasion.
Class cost per student: $35 per child, $60 for two kids from the same family, $80 for more than two.
Drop-in fee: No. The learning is cumulative so dropping by half way thru wouldn’t work.
Prerequisites for this class: No.

(**Please note: The class will only meet a total of five times. No class November 13.)

QUESTIONS? OR TO REGISTER CONTACT: Bruce at Bruce@BruceTHolmes.com.

GAME DESIGN WORKSHOP
1:30PM – 2:30PM
Monopoly, Candy Land, Risk, Settlers of Catan… Everyone has played board games. But have you ever wanted to make you own? Game design is an emerging crossdisciplinary field which seeks to discover what makes a good game. It requires a mix of creative and analytical skills, together with an understanding of psychology. Game design investigates what players experience when they are engaged in the act of gameplay. In this workshop, we will be studying game design first hand by creating our very own board games. The first few sessions, we will take time to study the design of a few classic games and how to incorporate ideas from those into our own games. Some eclectic supplies will be provided, scavenged from other board games, but feel free to bring your own supplies. And of course, the last day, we will be teaching each other the games we’ve made and play-testing them.

Instructor Information: Michael Maloney is a software developer with a love of computer science, mathematics, and programming languages.

Class geared toward ages: 12+ years.
Class cost per student: $70 (includes cost of supplies).
Drop in fee: $10.

THE MAGIC OF SPANISH

2:40PM – 3:40PM
My passion is to teach the Spanish language through theatre, magic and interactive play. My goal is to generate a “love” for Spanish and get the kids to learn the language without realizing that they are learning a new language.   I do this by involving the children in activities they enjoy and are familiar with. Some examples of activities are: 1) Ball Toss for Numbers. With this activity the kids learn numbers and develop their ability to listen and work in a group. 2) Create and perform magic tricks to learn vocabulary and grammar (they will then perform the magic in Spanish). 3) We will create improve games where they will speak and learn Spanish. Through creative play, real life situations, repetition and enjoyment the kids will gain a deeper understanding and retention of the language. In this class the kids are guaranteed to have fun while learning.

Instructor Information: My name is Manuel Rueda, I’m 22 years old. I am from Madrid, Spain and at the moment, I am an international exchange student studying at a local university here in Chicago. I have a degree from the Uni. Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid in teaching physical theatre and visual art.       I have worked with children of all ages for more than 13 years in many capacities. This includes theatre, magic and circus. I never liked learning language because I considered the books and worksheets to be quite tedious and I felt that it was not a good way to learn something as beautiful as language. One day I traveled to another country and realized that we can learn language by involving the students in the language. I developed an interactive program to teach language through the arts. I have taught English to children in Spain using this method very successfully.

Class geared toward ages: 9 years and up.
Class cost per student: $80 per student. Siblings discount $15 per child.
Drop-in fee: $20 (if class is not full).
Prerequisites for this class: None.

IMPROV THEATRE GAMES
2:40PM – 3:40PM
Improv is the new rage in schools, summer camps and small theaters which are offering improv classes to eager improvisers!  This class will offer children a safe and fun environment playing improvisational theatre games that will not only bring laughs, but help breed good listening skills, self-confidence, acceptance of others, as well as encourage and nurture innate curiosity and creativity.  The laughs will come naturally as we improvise scenes with all sorts of unexpected hilarity.  Kids love this kind of stuff!

Instructor Information:  I am Masha Furmanova a homeschool mom with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education – go figure.  I have been taking improv classes for over 5 years and have now begun hosting evenings with fellow classmates and friends. I have put together many a theatre program, and even taught a pre-school “improv” class, years ago.   My 8 year old daughter, Anya, enjoys these improv games with her friends, thus it seemed like a good time to bring her to the stage, me to the front of the class and invite other homeschoolers that might be interested as well to play along with us!

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER PROGRAMMING WITH PYTHON
2:40PM – 3:40PM
The best way to understand how computers work is by learning to program them. A program is set of instructions for telling a computer what to do. But computers don’t understand English. So what do they understand? In this class, we will be learning the basics of Python, a popular programming language used by millions of software developers around the world. Python’s clear syntax makes it a good teaching language, while its enormous open source software ecosystem make it suitable for writing production software for companies and organizations. We will learn about data and how it is organized with lists and dictionaries, how to make decisions based on data using if statements, iterating over lists and repeating steps multiple times, how to organize code into manageable pieces with functions, and how to read and write data to files.

Instructor Information: Michael Maloney is a software developer with a love of computer science, mathematics, and programming languages.

Class geared toward ages: 12+ years.
Class cost per student: $60.
Supply fee: None. But a laptop is required.
Drop-in fee: $10.
